Preface

The novel opens by stating that many people did not know that the human race's origins are traced back to places other than earth. The preface then describes a theory that humans were sent to earth through space in a spacecraft from millions of miles away. It then states that many scientists do not believe the theory and that Mr Richards, the main character, will prove them wrong.

Before the invasion

Before the invasion occurs, the novel describes the daily life of Mr Richards, collecting samples, researching and interacting with locals. He is particularly friendly with Farmer John Walkey. They interact many times, and when Farmer Walkey is sick, Mr Richards contemplates suicide. When Mr Richards goes to buy a book for Farmer Walkey, a falling star drops onto the village, destroying the entire main village and flattening buildings.

The invasion

Mr Richards discovers that a spacecraft had fallen on the village and that creatures were emerging. The creatures created land crafts and headed towards Christchurch. The crafts destroyed towns and villages along the way, killing thousands of people with their guns and projectile weapons.

The destruction of the creatures

At the end of the novel, the society in which the creatures lived was described as a totalitarian society, with factories and towers of steel. Soon, a war broke out in the society, and the creatures destroyed themselves in one day. Once the creatures are destroyed, cities and towns are rebuilt, and Mr Richards returns to New Weybridge. The novel ends off warning that the creatures could come back.
