The preface then describes a theory that humans were sent to earth through space in a spacecraft from millions of miles away. It then states that many scientists do not believe the theory and that Mr Richards, the main character, will prove them wrong. Before the invasion Before the invasion occurs, the novel describes the daily life of Mr Richards, collecting samples, researching and interacting with locals. He is particularly friendly with Farmer John Walkey. They interact many times, and when Farmer Walkey is sick, Mr Richards contemplates suicide.
